At the beginning of the invasion, Jews in the Netherlands were able to go about their business doing what they had been doing all their lives. In October of 1942, this all changed. Jews were given lots of limitations and their lives as they knew it changed quickly. They were required to register their names and houses so that the Nazi’s would know where the Jews were in the town. Anne received a diary for her 13th birthday the summer of 1942. ("Anne frank," 2010.) In her diary, Anne lists a long list of the things that had changed, “Jews were required to wear a yellow star; Jews were required to turn in their bicycles; Jews were forbidden to use trams; Jews were forbidden to ride in cars, even their own; Jews were required to do their shopping between 3:00 and 5:00 P.M.; Jews were required to frequent only Jewish-owned barbershops and beauty parlors; Jews were forbidden to be out on the streets between 8:00 P.M. and 6:00 A.M.; Jews were forbidden to attend theaters, movies or any other forms of entertainment; Jews were forbidden to use swimming pools, tennis courts, hockey fields or any other athletic fields…” (Frank, 1991, 67.) She goes on to list numerous things that the Jews were no longer allowed to do. They were on strict lockdown.
Several weeks after the invasion, Margot gets called to go to labor camp. Labor camps in Germany consisted of forcing people to do physical work without proper clothing, equipment, food, and rest. They were basically a form of torture. They had desperate labor shortages and economic problems in Germany at the time, so this is how they took care of it. If Margot doesn’t go to labor camp, the whole family will be arrested. ("Forced labor: An," 2013.)
