Anne’s
diary acted as her best friend while living in the secret annex. Her entries are
always written to her diary which is named “kitty”. She writes down all of her
thoughts and everything that happens to her in the diary. One quote from her diary states “The nicest
part is being able to write down all my thoughts and feelings, otherwise I'd
absolutely suffocate.” (Frank, 1991, 323.) The diary served as a way for her to feel
connected to the outside world. It gave her hope and peace. She had hoped that it might be published one day, but did not know the reality of it.
When Otto returned to the Netherlands after the war was over, he was given Anne’s diary which consists of five notebooks and 300 loose papers. Otto Frank compiled the papers into a manuscript that was eventually published. This book is one of the most famous books in the world, known as The Diary of Anne Frank. The book is a testament to the life of the many Jews who were killed all of those years. It is one of the required readings at schools across the globe. (History.com Staff, 2009.)
